Asphalt Patching

Asphalt patching is filling up holes and cracks on roads, parking lots, pavements, tennis courts, and playgrounds that are made from asphalt. Several techniques are used to achieve asphalt patching.

When patching is done as soon as it is discovered, it prevents further tear and deterioration to the asphalt. Hence, repairs should be made as soon as it is discovered to avoid more damages and a huge cost for repair. Materials that are used for asphalt patching range from asphalt emulsion mixes, hot mix asphalt, and other proprietary patching mixes that have special blends.

We will determine the type of asphalt to be used and the materials that we will need for repairs based on the rate of damage and tear.

Can You Patch Asphalt?

Asphalt can be patched through a series of methods. Is your child’s playground ridiculed with cracks and you want to know if it's a good idea to patch? Yes, it is a doable process.

Asphalt Patching And Crack Repair

Asphalt can be patched and repaired in case of cracks, wears, and tears. Below are some asphalt repair methods that are commonly used for damaged asphalt structures.
  • Semi-permanent patches - much like you may have guessed, these are semi-permanent repairs. This method first requires a proper surface preparation, then water and debris are removed through the use of an air compressor or a conventional broom. The area is then cleanly cut with a power tool for a better shape. The hole or crack is then filled with the mixture and then compacted with a roller.
  • Throw and roll - this is a very temporary solution that is used when there is a need for a quick fix in cases of emergency. This is a temporary patching technique that utilizes liquid asphalt in cases of harsh weather or the winter. The liquid asphalt is applied to the hole and is done in layers. Soon as it starts to react with air, the mixture begins to turn solid.
  • Spray Injection method - this type of asphalt filling, the mixture is applied to the hole, crack or patch at high pressure after the affected area is blown by special truck-mounted equipment. This is done to first get rid of the debris or water present on the site that requires patching. After the area is injected at high pressure, it begins to solidify and there is no need for compacting due to the rate at which it was infused in the hole.
  • Full-depth patching -  this is also known as a permanent repair method that involves the excavation of the affected area by at least four inches then adding a foot to the surrounding areas. This is done to provide firmer support for the asphalt and then a tack coat is applied. This is done to provide proper bonding with the asphalt and give it a firmer rooting. This type of patching is called full-depth patching and is a permanent solution to cracks and potholes.

Is It Better To Patch Or Replace Your Asphalt Parking Lot?

Replacing your asphalt can carry a huge cost and would be an insane undertaking when the asphalt is not completely damaged. In the case of small cracks, potholes, you can use full-depth patches for long-lasting effects or any other mixes per your requirements at that moment.

It is better to patch than replace your entire asphalt if all you're dealing with are potholes. But several cracks in and around the parking lot may warrant a total redo.
